The dissertation is devoted to the substantiation of the ontosemantic concept of choral art through the analysis of the philosophical dichotomy "nature – human". The relevance of the topic lies in the reflected uncertainty of the relationship between human and nature as a subject of composer’s reflection (firstly), which motivates the renewal of the methodology of choral studies in modern China (secondly) on the basis of studying the European experience of "thinking about nature" through the means of choral singing. Although some researchers have turned to the description of the semantics of nature (most often through the connection of means of musical expressiveness with program quality), however, today in musicology there is no holistic vision of the semiotics of nature as a methodological problem that has practical significance for performers. The material of the dissertation is 20 choral compositions as typical examples of the composer's interpretation of images of nature (being that is signified), embodied by Chinese artists by means of choral singing (the composition as a system of signs of signification) and reproduced in the activities of choral groups (choral interpretation as an artefact). The ontosemantic approach does not cancel traditional methods of analysis (genre, form, style), however, on their basis it clarifies the unity of the sonological and symbolic nature of choral singing. It is the "ontos" – the being of sound – through "sonos", which contains "logos" (meaning) that objectifies the law of unity (mutuality) of the linguistic-stylistic thinking of the music creator and the cognitive-associative perception/understanding of the composition by other participants in musical communication. Therefore, the author (as a conductor and chorister) seeks to find the "eternal" meanings of the relationship between human and nature based on scientific modelling of the experience of national-stylistic presentation of images of nature in Chinese choral music.
