Abstract
The article analyzes the improvisational style of Grover Washington Jr. as one of the key representatives of smooth jazz. A four-dimensional model of his improvisational style is proposed (phenomenological, pragmatic, personal, and communicative), which allows for a systematic description of his performing manner. It is shown that his improvisations combine “horizontal” melodic thinking, the “two-chord vamp” principle, and a distinctive conversational-recitative intonation. The study concludes that Washington’s work represents an important stage in the development of crossover and smooth jazz, bringing jazz closer to a wider audience while preserving its artistic expressiveness.
